Carson Valley, Nevada
The Carson Valley Agricultural and Ranching Community has developed an exclusive event that provides an educational and up-close way to view birds of prey during the Annual Eagles and Agriculture Event, February 22-24.
The Eagles and Agriculture tours and workshops focus on the influx of birds of prey that come to the scenic Carson Valley to feed on the rodents and nutrient-rich afterbirth during the winter calving season. This unique interaction between nature and agriculture attracts photographers, birders and nature-lovers of all kinds who come to observe bald and golden eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and a variety of other bird/wildlife species.
Friday evening, February 22, there will be a Birds of Prey Lecture/Reception featuring keynote speaker wildlife biologist Gary Herron who will bring a falcon and speak on birds of prey. Local falconer Lew Souder will deliver an informative presentation featuring a Northern Goshawk. Also, event leaders will review the itinerary for the Saturday ranch tour. The $35 per person entry fee includes hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar.
Saturday morning, February 23, luxury motor coaches depart for a private group tour of area ranches to observe the birds of prey feeding in the fields with calves and cattle. Following the tour, a buffet lunch will be served with a group discussion on sightings. The cost is $60 per person.
SORRY--OWL PROWL IS SOLD OUT!
A Two-Day Photography Workshop will be offered on Saturday and Sunday with instruction and discussion on Day One and a nature photo shoot on location at an area ranch on Day Two. The cost is $60 for the two-day workshop. For more details, contact international wildlife photographer Steve Noble at 775-265-4414 or at MomentsInTimePhotography@gmail.com
Another unique way to observe the eagles, hawks and falcons occurs on Sunday, February 24, when a guided Raft/Canoe Trip will be offered. Participants will paddle down the beautiful Carson River and enjoy scenery and wildlife. After registering through this site, rafter should contact Pat Fried, Great Basin Sports at (775) 450-3446 or Friedschool@hotmail.com The cost for the river trip is $75.

Mormon Station State Park in Genoa
Tour of the Carson Valley - Barbeque & Ice Cream Social, presented by GE Energy, is a fun historic bicycle tour for all abilities in the beautiful Carson Valley and is one of the many events offered in conjunction with MAGIKO. Pedal back in time on optional mileage routes taking recreational bicyclists along the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range on former Pioneer, Pony Express, Stagecoach and Emigrant Wagon roadways.
Start - Finish: Mormon Station State Park in Genoa The ride starts and finishes at Mormon Station State Park in historic Genoa Nevada, established as Nevada's first settlement in 1851. Located on Jacks Valley Road/Foothill Road and Genoa Lane/Highway 758. Turn towards the mountains off U.S. Highway 395 onto Genoa Lane/Highway 758.
All registered bicyclists will receive a Carson Valley MAGIKO Festival Welcome Packet, event number t-shirt and water bottle, food/snack and beverage at rest stops, technical support at the start-finish as well as on the course, SAG support, after ride barbeque, ice cream and live entertainment. All registered bicyclists will also receive one free drawing ticket to win prizes including the grand prize of a Trek Fat Tire Cruiser Bike.
Bicycling Tour Options:
14-Mile Family Fun Ride: heads north on the bike lane along Jacks Valley road with a 200-foot gentle climb to a rest stop at Jacks Valley Elementary School. Bicyclists will turn around and return to the finish at Mormon Station State Park.
20-Mile Bike/Hike Tour: heads south on Foothill Road passing many historic markers to a rest stop at the Faye-Luther Trailhead. This is a popular trailhead for hiking and horseback riding. Hiking is optional. If you want to combine bike riding with hiking this would be a great option and it is recommended that participants wear shoes that would accommodate both bicycling and hiking. Bicyclists will turn around and return to the finish at Mormon Station State Park.
44-Mile Tour of the Carson Valley: heads north on Foothill Road to Fredricksburg Road and climbs up Carson River Road to a rest stop at Woodfords Station, then around Diamond Valley Road and returns to the finish at Mormon Station State Park. This is one of the most popular bicycling routes departing from Carson Valley. Bicyclists will pass many points of historic interest along this route from Walley's Hot Springs-Resort-Spa to Old Kingsbury Grade, Van Sickle Station to the settlements of Mottsville, Sheridan, Fredricksburg and Woodfords Station on the Pony Express Trail. The Diamond Valley Road loop includes viewing historic markers in memorial for legendary "Snowshoe Thompson" who settled in Diamond Valley and was known to carry mail from Genoa over the Sierra's to Placerville and back on long wooden snow shoes (skis). The route also rides through "Hung-a-Lel'Te", Southern Band Washoe Tribe Reservation.
